Kanye West recently revealed that his wife, Bianca Censori, recommended him to a doctor, who then diagnosed him with autism—more than eight years after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016. This revelation has sparked conversation about the complexities of mental health and how different diagnoses can overlap or be misinterpreted over time.
Kanye “Ye” West is reflecting on his personal journey. The “Father Stretch My Hands” rapper recently shared that his wife, Bianca Censori, questioned his initial bipolar diagnosis. She recommended he see a new doctor, who then provided a different diagnosis, revealing that Kanye is on the autism spectrum. This shift in understanding marks a significant moment in his ongoing journey with mental health.
Kanye West shared on The Download podcast with Justin LaBoy on February 4 that his wife, Bianca Censori, played a pivotal role in his diagnosis journey. He explained, “My wife took me because she said, ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar, I’ve seen bipolar before.’” After seeing a new doctor, Kanye discovered that his condition was actually autism, not bipolar disorder as previously thought. This revelation marked a significant shift in his understanding of his mental health.
Kanye, who shares four children—North, 11, Saint, 8, Chicago, 6, and Psalm, 5—with ex-wife Kim Kardashian, has been open about his mental health struggles. He first shared his bipolar diagnosis after a hospitalization in 2016, when he experienced a “psychiatric emergency.” His ongoing transparency about his journey has sparked conversations around mental health, self-awareness, and the importance of accurate diagnoses.
Now, the Yeezy founder reflects on his past behavior, putting it into perspective. “You’re like, ‘Oh man, I’m gonna wear this [Donald] Trump hat ’cause I just like Trump in general,'” Kanye shared. “And when people tell you not to do it…and that’s my problem, when fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way.” His comments highlight how he often reacts against external pressure, whether it’s from fans or public opinion, which has played a significant role in his actions and public persona.
Kanye acknowledged that his diagnosis became a challenge for those around him, as his behavior made it difficult for others to offer support. “It’s so difficult for them because this is like a grown man, you can’t tell him,” he explained. “You can’t take control of his bank account. You can’t control what I’m saying on Twitter.” His comments reveal the tension between wanting help and resisting control, particularly when it comes to his personal and professional choices.
